Before you think about securing your home or business computer, you should look at it from another angle. Think of your computer as you would your house, flat or your apartment. You wouldn't ever leave all the windows and doors wide open so someone could just walk in and snoop or steal, so remember not to leave your system wide open to attack! Most consumers think they are safe from online security threats but lack basic protections against viruses, spyware, hackers, and other internet menaces. Nearly two-thirds of consumers (63 per cent) have been the victim of a virus infection in the past.
You have to remember that Email, Instant Messaging and browsing the internet go through in the clear, meaning without the right precautions, anyone can capture it and read it. You should always select and use strong passwords and you can start your security effort by adding a firewall, an anti-virus program, patches, and file encryption to improve the level of security on your computer. This is just the start, and once you get into the habit of protecting yourself and your information it will become second nature. |
